Q&A with Third Day

Atlanta Christian Weekly recently got the opportunity to speak with Tai Anderson of Third Day. The Atlanta native spoke of the group’s Grammy Win, their silver screen debut, the upcoming Dove Awards, and a whole lot more.

ACW: How does it feel to win a Grammy? Where are you keeping it?
TAI: It was pretty cool. It was our fourth nomination- our fourth trip to the Grammy’s, so we pretty much had agreed that if we didn’t win we were going to be pretty disappointed. I’m thinking about building an addition to the house for people to come and look at it.

ACW: Are you excited about the Dove Awards? How many of those do you have?
TAI: That’s kind of the reality, that even with the Grammy -it is certainly a very prestigious award that everyone knows- I think that the Dove award is probably a bit more reflective. The people voting on the Doves are more understanding of what Third Day is. We’re definitely looking forward to it.

ACW: How was the premiere of your new DVD- Was it neat to see yourselves on the silver screen?
TAI: It was neat. We were
the first to do that, it’s brand new technology. It actually downloaded to all the theatres in the country. It’s kind of a ground breaking idea. It was a little wired, because you’re in the audience watching ourselves. It was fun. We still see ourselves as a local band, so whenever we go play HiFi (Ampitheatre) and it sells out or play Philips Arena and it’s sold out, it’s cool that so many people would care. We can’t even fathom that hundreds of thousands of people buy our records. But I’m a fan of Third Day. I like our music!

ACW: Tell us about your new CD, Offerings II?
TAI: The hard thing with that record is that we weren’t sure we really wanted to make it. We felt like when we made the offerings record, it felt like its own kind of entity. Our fans asked for it. As we did that, we became part of this larger worship movement, and as a band we always want to be original- so the idea that we’re kind of lumped in with this whole other thing happening is cool on the one hand. When we made the first one it was really novel. (They debated whether to do it or not. Then they just decided to do it until they got uninspired.) It was an album worth putting out there. It’s something that’s really different. It’s not just another worship album. It’s kind of like the music that you’re not going to hear at your church. It’s definitely rock.

ACW: When’s the next time you’re playing here locally?
TAI: We don’t have our concrete plans yet. We’re not doing Atlanta Fest this year. We’re playing up in Hiwassee - my folks live in the southern part of North Carolina. I’m sure we’ll show up in some capacity somewhere. We want to keep it special for Atlanta, we want to make sure we have new stuff to do and do a unique show.

ACW: Are you doing any joint tours this spring?
TAI: We’re doing it again with Michael (Michael W. Smith) this spring in the west coast. We really like the idea of collaborating with other artists. I really like that, but at the same time, I just feel we have more songs we want to play. If we don’t play them people are going to be upset. I’d love to do a show where we just throw down and play for three hours.
