A MOMENT WITH MATT
Front man for the ever evolving Havalina Rail Co., owner of Jackson Rubio records and overall nice guy, Matt Wignall takes a few minutes of his most busy schedule to upload some data with [mushmouth].

MM: whats your story?
matt: I was born April 4, 1972, in Long Beach Ca. I haven't gone to far, still living in Long Beach. My earliest childhood memories are from just outside of Eugene,OR where I lived with my parents around 2-4 years old. After that it was mostly down hill. I got in trouble a lot at school for messing around to much, and I learned to take and develop pictures in photography class in highschool, (the only class where I received a B or higher grade).
MM: Can you briefly describe how the whole Jackson Rubio label came about? matt: I wanted, and still want to do something unique. A label that caters only to true independent, underground music. The only problem I've run into is there are only a few Christians interested in unique creative music.
MM: Just like Havalinas albums, J.R. artists range in a variety of genres. Is this same "havalina-diversity" approach taken when producing the other bands?
matt: There is no specific approach I take when I get to produce a band, I just try to bring out the things I like in the music. My personal taste tends to be very broad, so if I produce a band I generally like to switch things around a little from song to song to add a little diversity. I like to listen to records from beginning to end and I hate it when an album gets boring.
MM: Ive seen this 5star label thing around...how is that related to you and Jackson Rubio?
matt: There are bands here and there that I come across and decide to sign, and I don't feel like they fit into the Jackson/Rubio roster. I started this label for those bands. A friend of mine who is reformed in his faith thought of the name.
MM: As a musician and label owner you play a part in the whole christian arts thing. Are you (or would you like to be) involved in any other forms of media or fine art?
matt: I am also a photographer, have been working on a book for some time, and am currently trying to make an independent film, and I'm broke.
MM: whats your take on the current status of Christian art and culture?
matt: I think it is getting better because there are people out here like yourself that are interested in art and culture. For a long time I think the church in America has felt threatened by the arts. This is very unfortunate because the arts are one of the best ways to communicate with people. I would like to see some GOOD film makers come out of the Christian world because I think at this point in history film is one of the most powerful artistic mediums out there.
MM:Havalina has played music that has ranged from swing to jazz to russian influences...whats the theme on the new album AMERICA?
matt: America is a road trip around America with music defining most of the geographical or cultural regions in America.
MM: Havalina has released a new album, had a big summer tour, what next?
matt: We are writing new music, playing a lot on the west coast, and embarking on an album that will most likely have a lot of latin influence.
