Seventh Day Slumber un-apologetically proclaims God
in every song on the album. The opening track, and first single is
titled “I know”. This emotional song seems to speak directly to
the listener. Rojas talks about how it can be hard sometimes to see
the true value of your life. He advises listeners to look at the
gift Jesus gave, and not on your troubles to find meaning in your
life. The second track “Candy” speaks about the indescribable
feeling of having God’s grace in your life. The title comes from
the comparison of the never-ending love of God to candy. The other
songs on the album speak about the price Christ was willing to pay
to set us free, the difficulties of living for Christ and how God
will get us through those difficult times. The album also has a
hidden track that contains an altar call like the one given at the
end of every concert.
Musically Seventh Day Slumber is comparable to many
other modern rock groups. Picking Up The Pieces is full of fast,
powerful guitars and robust drums. SDS does add a more melodic touch
for some songs that adds a great deal of depth and meaning to the
overall feel of the album. The title track demonstrates what I mean
by combining P&W with Rock genres. The tender and smooth verses
cry out to God with awe, praise, gratitude and love all the while
keeping the song moving with sharp, driving, and strong guitar riffs
that show the bands modern rock style. The entire album is filled
with impressive instrumentation, and inspiring lyrics. The vocals
are bright and polished, yet still deliver that rock edge where
needed.
The main focus of the Nashville, TN based band is to
reach those that more traditional media might miss. The band members
bring a diverse background to their music and use it to personally
connect to their audience. Lead singer Joseph Rojas found Jesus in
the back of an ambulance after a major drug overdose. Drummer Juan
“Rhino” Alvarez was a repented street fighter and robber.
Guitarist Jeremy Holderfield watched his father leave his family for
a younger woman. Bassist Joshua Schwartz lived with his missionary
parents in Malaysia for many years. The band dedicated itself to
telling others about the hope they found in Jesus. SDS toured with
Acquire the Fire, before joining the newly formed Crowne Music Group
to produce this phenomenal album.
While the band has the blazing guitars and energetic
beats of a modern rock group it still gives off that positive
feeling you can only get from a worship band. Though the band talks
about some disheartening issues they always show how Jesus is the
answer to even the most difficult situations we find ourselves in.
Seventh Day Slumber will certainly be around awhile as they have
produced a superior album that is sure to draw fans in and never let
go.
