Album Review

Joy Electric has to be the most prolific band in electronic music. Off the heels of last years Hello Mannequin is The Ministry Of Archers. This album marks a return to old roots and a redirection for the future. Ronnie Martin has been at a musical crossroads for a couple of years (since the release of The Art & Craft Of Popular Music), and instead of making a big leap (or ever a real readjustment), he's put out a handful or remarkable pop albums. The Ministry of Archers returns to the old, slightly gothic and medevil JE, where Martin is a Count in a land full of jesters. In some ways, this album is like a redirected We Are The Music Makers. It has me pretty stoked, because my favorite JE album is the companion EP, Old Wives Tales.

Here, we have a return to old imagery, yet there's a new element in the mix that gives Archers a sense of the future. Martin is now using some moog synths, and the beats sound more crisp and radiant. Songs themselves are well structured (a big understatement), and I know of no musician who is as particular of every note than Martin. He is a man who has been on the search for the perfect pop song since his the inception of Joy Electric, and minus a few, small missteps along the way, he has steadily been progressing on his journey for over 10 years. The Ministry Of Archers is an essential piece of electronica.
