Album Reviews
Kutless
is a young band (one member over 21) that brings a hard
rocking sound that many have compared to Creed. If you
like bands like 38th
Parallel,
Puddle of Mudd or Staind, you'll enjoy their music.
Veteran producer Aaron Sprinkle (Pedro the Lion, MxPx,
Stavesacre) has given us a CD that rocks, offering a
simple but overtly Christian message. I've heard
complaints that they sound like Creed repackaged for
13-year-old Christian boys, but as the father of a
12-year-old, I don't see that as a bad thing--in fact, I
enjoy the CD for my own listening anyway. If you want
deep theology, reach for a book, not a CD.
The guitars are upfront and the message is clear in songs
like Vow:
I’m crying out to You now / As I make my New
Year’s vow / I’ll tell You I love You / And I’ll
honor You somehow / Hear my promise to You in this New
Year’s vow / I give You all of me / You’ll be all of
my life / And I’ll never think twice / To do all that
You have for me / In my New Year’s vow // Lord I’ll
do my best to do all that I say / I’m not perfect but I
know it’s okay / If I stumble You won’t condemn my
shame / I’m going to make a vow to repent and turn to
You
I like the thought of that running through my son's head.
Apparently a few other people do too, since Kutless
was one of the top-selling new bands in the past year.
Opening for the Supertones probably helped, but Kutless
has the potential to be a headliner before long. ~ Randy Brandt
I
bought this cd without ever really listening to it and I
was immediately impressed. It is obvious to most everyone
that Christian music has never had the same sound quality
as secular music. Almost any Christian song can
immediately be distinguished by its simplistic approach
or just lack of musical talent and originality. They
incorporate things such as guitar lead riffs and backup
violins throughout their songs with great sounding
effects that create a sense of professionalism. This is a
band that has a lot of talent and could definitely make
it as a secular band if they tried. It is also a relief
that they make a very obvious stand for Christianity and
do not try to avoid their faith in their lyrics as some
Christian bands have done. This is a terrific cd and I
suggest anyone who likes the sound of bands such as
Creed, Nickelback, System of a Down, etc. try it out.
